Sleepers + grasses

To achieve a natural link between the house and the garden, a staircase was built into the sloping mountainside.

Set on a steep mountainside in Swaanzwyk, Cape Town, this contemporary steel and black glass house required extensive landscaping in order to link the main house to the rest of the property and construct a functional garden. Mountainside was cute away, and the soil was used to level the garden. Wooden terraces were also constructed along the slope.

Tone sourced over one-hundred, five meter gun sleepers, made from alien vegetation and placed them in a jagged formation, resembling a spine connecting the house to the garden. In between the sleepers, Tone used mass planting of ornamental and indigenous grasses.
